leafA comprehensive manual for the young and adult learner, including the instrument’s history, repertoire, techniques, musicianship, learning materials, practice strategies, performance skills, career options and bibliography for further study.

If you love the classical guitar the way I do then this book is for you: With its soft delicate sound, its exquisitely challenging techniques, its woody smell, sensuous touch, and exotic history and allure, the guitar embodies beauty for you – and all you need to do now is learn to play the thing!

With this book I am trying to give you all you need to make a successful start - except for the teacher and the instrument: You’ll get the history, the logistics, the techniques, the music, problems and solutions, theory and practice, the privacy and the stage, a possible professional future, and lots of thoughts about the guitar which hopefully may turn you on to its soul even more – and if you are blessed with just a touch of talent and discipline and a lot of genuine interest and dedication, then you will soon be able to play the guitar beautifully.

This book is my personal dedication to the guitar. It contains all that, through over 25 years of learning, teaching and playing, I consider essential in order to gain comprehensive knowledge and ability in all aspects of the classical guitar at a beginner’s and intermediate level. Obviously, there is a range of guitar tutor books on the market, and, as with everything, different opinions and methods exist in regard to certain technical and musical matters. In fact, there is an extensive bibliography for further reading and study at the end of the book to assist you in further exploring the world of the guitar. My approach is based on fact, research, experience, and on openness, not only in regard to how others play and teach the classical guitar, but also to how the classical guitar is being perceived in a world of changing musical values.

In light of an evolution of a new music appreciation and education which is marked by a swing towards musical diversity and which integrates classical, postmodernist, ethnic and popular music styles, the classical guitar, through its adaptability and popular appeal, has the chance to be at the heart of the crossroads, without compromising or diluting its sophisticated traditional classical skills, techniques, and repertoire. This book contains much standard guitar repertoire from the past five centuries, but also a range of newer arrangements and adaptations of popular and ethnic music. The aim is not to popularise the classical guitar through sacrificing its innate historical authenticity, appeal and repertoire, but to make it more approachable and relevant and thus ensure its continued role as a preserver of classical music culture as well as a guide to a postmodernist integrative music appreciation.

If music is the voice of the angels, the sound of the classical guitar may be their sweetest.
May this book assist you in finding this voice.
